The Surveying Laboratory

The Surveying Lab course aims to introduce and develop the basic understanding of the principles of filed engineering surveying, through:
• Prepare students for performing various engineering measurements.
• Introduce common surveying instruments and field technical skills.
• Introduce tabulation and organisation of filed notes.
By the end of the course, students should:
• Have ability of conducting measurements.
• Be familiar with common survey instruments and possess some field technical skills.
• Developed practical field notes organisation skills.
The Surveying lab is extended to two semesters on three hours weekly lab exercises. Students are divided in groups of five to six crews to conduct a specific practical session using a dedicated set of instruments. Apart from Planimeter session, all assignments are carried out in the field. A field book is used to record field notes and data. After the end of each practical, each student must submit his field book to the convenor or one of practical class staff for checking and marking. The final mark of each semester is calculated as 50% for weekly mark, according to participant and submitted field book, and 50% for end-semester practical exam.
