Marwa Abdullah Miri Al-Janabi, a faculty member in the Department of Water Resources Engineering at the University of Kufa’s Faculty of Engineering, recently earned her doctorate in Civil Engineering focusing on Water Resources. Dr. Imad Habib Obaid supervised her thesis from the University of Babylon College of Engineering.
The thesis was titled “Simulation Models and Hybrid Artificial Intelligence for Groundwater Resources.” This study examined groundwater stress and depletion in the Dammam aquifer, which spans the governorates of Najaf and Muthanna. Using GMS software, a digital simulation of groundwater flow was conducted to study the Dammam Aquifer. Remote sensing and GIS were used to map potential groundwater prospecting areas, supported by multi-criteria decision analysis using the analytic hierarchy process method. In addition, five machine learning algorithms were implemented under combined supervision with a GIS to generate hybrid artificial intelligence models. A graphical user interface was developed in MATLAB to determine the prospective groundwater areas, requiring only the input of a well’s geographic coordinates to classify its location on the study area map.
