Professor Dr. Ali Abdel-Hussein Al-Tamimi, a faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, was elected as the Vice-Chairman representing the Republic of Iraq on the Permanent Arab Committee for Building Codes for the 2024-2025 term.
Dr. Al-Tamimi stated that the election occurred during a meeting attended by representatives from Iraq and other Arab countries, including Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Libya, Egypt, Morocco, and Yemen. Representatives from the Arab Industrial Development, Standardization, and Mining Organization, the General Secretariat of the Arab League, and the Committee’s technical secretariat also participated.
During the meeting, the final version of the Arab Code of Ethics for the Engineering Profession, prepared by Iraq under the leadership of Dr. Al-Tamimi, in conjunction with Palestine and Kuwait, was handed over to the drafting committee. Discussions also covered updates on the preparation and modernization of unified Arab codes, with 40 such codes now completed across various construction specialties. Cooperation activities with relevant Arab organizations and federations were followed, and the committee’s work was evaluated.
Al-Tamimi noted that the Permanent Committee sought to unify construction requirements across Arab countries. He said that the committee thanked Iraq for its pioneering role and called on other Arab nations to emulate Iraq’s example in implementing codes. Progress was reviewed in Iraq’s preparation for a unified Arab code based on the completed codes.
