A symposium entitled “Enhancing the Positive Contribution of Young People in Reducing the Phenomenon of Violent Extremism and Combating Terrorism” was held by the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Division at the University of Kufa, in collaboration with the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit in the Faculty of Engineering. The event was held under the auspices of the university president, Prof. Dr. Yasser Lafta Hassoun, and under the supervision of the dean of the faculty, Prof. Dr. Hasan Mahdi Al-Khateeb. A representative of the National Security Adviser was also present at the event held in Najaf.
During the symposium, Prof. Dr. Nadia Jawdat Hassan, the director of the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Division, delivered a lecture on promoting positive aspects among the youth to combat violent extremism and terrorism. She discussed the issue of stagnation among young people, which often leads to a loss of security, fear, and reluctance to start a family.
The university president stressed the importance of youth distancing themselves from extremist ideas and suspicious movements and promoting a culture of tolerance and cooperation within the university and beyond.
The dean of the faculty spoke about the need for systematic preventive measures to address the root causes that drive individuals toward extremism, including creating job opportunities for young people and instilling positive values in students.
The symposium was well-received by attendees, which included professors and students who participated through interventions and discussions that reflected their significant interest in the topic.
