Under the guidance of the Dean of the College of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Hassan Mahdi Al-Khatib, and under the patronage of the Head of the Electrical Engineering Department, Assistant Professor Dr. Amer Abdul-Mahdi Al-Jalihawi, the Department of Electrical Engineering organized a Sumner on Sunday,4th September, entitled:
(Using the differential protection schemes for a microgrid)
Which was delivered by Dr. Zaid Tariq Hassan.
Microgrids, which are a developed form of distribution networks combined with Distributed Generation of its various types (renewable energies and traditional energy generation) to meet local demand, were discussed. The protection system for these networks has become a major challenge due to the increasing spread of these generators, especially renewable energies that depend on converting power from direct current to alternating current. Therefore, the traditional protection is no longer appropriate for this system. An appropriate protection system was used to protect Microgrids from all types of malfunctions in both modes (on grid & off grid for ring and radial networks). It used a factor that depends on the current of the positive component.
As a means of differential protection to protect microgrids, a self-protective backup is provided in case the main protection fails. In this way the problem of low current supplied by the distributed generators in the off grid mode has been overcome.
