The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Kufa, Assistant Professor Dr. Hasan Mahdi Al-Khateeb, participated in the virtual scientific symposium held by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research on the reality of universities and their future.
Dr. Al-Khateeb clarified the ministry’s approach to link universities in general with society and provide services to it by finding solutions to problems of various types and contexts, and this was confirmed by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Prof. Dr. Nabil Abdel Saheb in his speech delivered on his behalf by the Undersecretary of the Ministry Dr. Ali Hamid Al-Shukry, indicating that to reach sustainable development and the goals aimed at serving society, there must be a global partnership in the field of education. Adding that the ministry has announced the formation of a specialized committee to comprehensively review the strategy of higher education in Iraq, analyze the reality of education in light of the current challenges, and present its scientific perceptions that extend from the current year 2021 to 2030 and take into account the national strategy for education and higher education for the years 2012-2022. Dr. Al-Khateeb stated that the Dean of the Faculty had formed a committee specialized in engaging with society by solving the problems of state institutions and the private sector. Believing in the necessity of engaging in academic work with a realistic and practical aspect to solve the most prominent problems and obstacles facing state institutions and the private sector, which in turn is reflected in the development of the performance of these institutions by finding appropriate scientific research solutions for them by making use of the experiences of professors and researchers specializing in harnessing research centers and laboratories with their modern equipment.
The undersecretaries of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, university presidents, faculty deans, lecturers, and researchers, and the President of Al-Hussein Technical University in Jordan, Prof. Dr. Ismail Al-Hanty, and Dr. Nigel Pax, Professor at the University of Sheffield, participated in the symposium, expressing the need to develop the path of education, knowledge, skills, and capacity development adaptation, scientific communication, upgrading the creative side and strengthening partnerships with international organizations and international universities. Explaining their perceptions about all academic contexts related to developing skills, organizing the complementary relationship with the private sector, focusing on the area of development required in the field of academic curricula in Iraqi universities, and funding applied research to cover scientific needs. The attendees from outside Iraq praised the scientific capabilities of Iraqi students, the challenges of education at this stage, and the increase in population growth, which doubles responsibilities in taking into account the acceleration in the field of developing higher education fields and scientific research.
