The joint research of Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Sabaa Hamoud, Head of the Department of Medical Materials Engineering, titled:
Surface Modification of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy by DC-Glow Discharge Plasma Nitriding Process for Tribo-corrosion Applications
The research was written with Dr. Thaer Latif Al-Zubaidi and the researcher Safa Hussein Ali, and was accepted at the World Scientific Conference:
4th International Conference on BioTribology

Dr Hamoud indicate that the Nitrogen plasma flux discharge is the process of surface hardening, which involves the spread of nitrogen atoms to the surface of the metal under the special conditions of the plasma. This process helps to increase corrosion and wear resistance of the metal used, besides the use in industrial and medical applications such as medical shoots in the human body. Titanium and titanium alloys are among the most common metals and alloys used in medical applications. Titanium has high resistance, light weight, corrosion resistant but lacks wear resistance under harsh environmental conditions, which frees metal ions (such as emancipating the vanadium ions that cause damage to the nervous system and Kidney, as well as the aluminum release may lead to Alzheimer ‘s). Surface improvement of titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) was achieved by continuous flow nitrogen (CN) plasma to improve wear resistance and increase the lifespan of the medical shoots within the human body.
